I am a big fan of Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha A’s Portable: The Gears of Destiny for PSP, and I really love this game. The animation is excellent, just like the physics, and you can choose from several characters from the first and second seasons. Cast spells and magical effects all around. The gears of destiny are turning, and no magical girl can escape. Original scenario writer Tsuzuki Maki crafted a completely new story for this installment, introducing new characters like Ametie, Kirie, Vivo, Ainharuto, and Tohma. The battle system has been upgraded with better camera angles and more significant magical effects.

Pound your opponents on the ground or swoop down on them from the air. The Range Shift battle system alters your controls when shifting from long-range to short-range, allowing players to strategize. Game reviews are often challenging, but I had a lot of passion for Lyrical Nanoha, and this was an effort I was willing to put in. The story mode has seen many improvements from the previous game to this entry, with a more developed plot and beautiful visuals used for most of the storytelling instead of simple dialogue. The gameplay is also more intense and tactical, something I would honestly say fighting game enthusiasts should check out just for the freshness of this game.

Features of Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha A’s Portable: The Gears of Destiny for PSP and PPSSPP emulator:

The game has truly been improved; the battles are smoother than the previous game, and the artificial intelligence is not as easy as the previous one. Or at least, I felt that the AI was slightly better. Each character has multiple costumes they can use, increasing the number of characters. There are about twice as many characters in this game compared to the previous one (Battle of the Aces), however, moves and sets are still limited like the previous games. The game also carries over the save from the previous game (though I’m not really sure what it unlocks because my Japanese knowledge is limited). Overall, a great improvement from the previous game!

Entering Gears of Destiny shortly after Battle of Aces felt like jumping into Cruel Melee in Super Smash after wiping Story Mode on Easy once. A lot has been changed and improved, notably the AI of the enemies. It’s really enjoyable to fight computer-controlled opponents because they pose a serious challenge. CC characters will relentlessly pursue you, trying to close you in for a close-quarters battle, while contrasting characters create distance and hit you with magic. The AI always seems capable of playing to each character’s strengths. In a one-on-one battle against Nanoha, I barely got in two hits before the AI completely smashed me.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha A’s Portable: The Gears of Destiny PPSSPP – [English Patch] Highly Compressed
Mahou Shoujo Nanoha A’s Portable: The Gears of Destiny for Android PPSSPP is a fighting video game published by Bandai Namco Games and released on December 22, 2011, for the PlayStation Portable.

The core principles remain the same, dynamically switching battles between gameplay styles depending on how separated opponents are from each other. When in range, all your moves are various spells with varying power and cast times based on whether you click or press the respective button. Character move sets have become more diverse, with completely unique playstyles like Yagami and ES. When opponents get close for a fight, the battle shifts from a 3D magical skirmish to a 2.5D clash akin to Virtua Fighter. Improvements have been made to move sets, allowing you to link moves more efficiently. Chain battles were a significant weakness in Battle of Aces, and while in Gears of Destiny, I might have been able to do more, I find myself enjoying this part of the matches much more.

Regarding the story mode, you can play characters as they become relevant, but in the versus mode (against other players and AI), you are left with a few of the starting characters. For most of the remaining heroes, you’ll need to first wipe the story mode entirely, which poses a challenge in itself because the few last battles are tough. By doing so, you unlock the free battle mode, which is largely similar to how the story mode works in the first game: you go through a series of battles leading to a conclusion against System UD. This is where a lot of characters get unlocked, though you’ll need multiple playthroughs to fulfill all the criteria correctly.

The game also features a survival mode and a time attack mode, the latter of which I couldn’t figure out how to unlock, and you have alternative costumes for all the fun characters to try out. Using the singing points you earn to win battles eludes me nonetheless, as it seems there’s no place to use them on anything. Again, since everything is in Japanese, it all depends on my utmost effort to understand.
