The exhibition mode allows you to freely play between your favorite characters without worrying about chapters or plotlines. There’s also a recommended training mode for beginners who are new to mini-games. Of course, engaging in matches in the dedicated mode is also possible. There aren’t many boxing games on the PSP. Currently, you have Fight Night Round 3, Rocky Balboa, and Boxer’s Road 2. However, today’s games, Hajime no Ippo Portable, is a Japanese boxing game that might not see the light in the United States. It was the same company that brought you Boxer’s Road 2 that decided to release a second boxing game, this time based on the manga Hajime no Ippo (Fighting Spirit in America) for PSP. But will this be a success for both players and fans alike? Let’s find out.
Hajime no Ippo Portable: Victorious Spirits is a game developed by ESP and Grand-Prix. For those unfamiliar with the manga, the story revolves around Ippo Makunochi and how he enters the world of boxing. After encountering boxers like Mike Tyson, he decides to become a boxer, thus beginning his quest to obtain the Japanese featherweight title and the world title. The story mode covers this most of the time, although if you don’t understand Japanese, you can skip it and head straight to the battles. This is the main mode you’ll play to unlock other boxers in addition to new story modes and other outfits for the boxers themselves. You also have an arcade and a custom mode to create unique boxers and put them in the ring in exhibition matches against the computer or in custom mode with another person who owns the game.

The gameplay is direct and sometimes strategic for some boxers. You’ll mix it up most of the time. You can play this game and win matches without any issue, but if you’re playing the story mode, it will be challenging to find alternative ways to defeat your opponents. The characters themselves look just like their manga counterparts, and although the story mode doesn’t have any voiceovers, the manga-inspired comic panels should be sufficient.
Overall, the game is very good. For those who love anime and manga, they will pick this up and beg for more Ippo. As a boxing game alone, it’s not bad either. It’s definitely different from Rocky Balboa and Fight Night, and since it’s based on this anime, there’s a good chance that this game might come to the United States under the title Victorious Boxer, just like its counterparts on PS2 and Wii. If you’re looking for some new cartoonish boxing on the go, this would be your best bet, even if you don’t understand the language.
