Ridge Racer 2 PSP is an arcade-style racing game developed by Namco Bandai Games for the handheld PlayStation console, marking the fourteenth release in the series and serving as a sequel to the original Ridge Racer PSP title. It was released in Japan on September 14, 2006, followed by Europe on October 13, and Australia on October 19. The North American release was canceled.

The essence of the series lies in drift racing, the traditional lap race against opponents with an added twist of deliberately exaggerating car direction and sliding through corners and sharp turns, known as “drifting.” This earns the player many rewards during the race. In many aspects, Ridge Racer 2 can be considered more of an update than a true sequel to the original PSP title, as it shares the same game engine, user interface, and game design as its predecessor, including almost all elements, cars, and tracks of its predecessor.

Featuring triple the playtime of its predecessor, Ridge Racer 2 adds a total of 42 new racing tracks (including 21 unique tracks, with reverse direction counted as a separate track), while taking 18 tracks from the previous game. There are two tracks from the original Ridge Racer, three tracks from Ridge Racer Revolution, four tracks from Rave Racer, eight tracks from R4: Ridge Racer Type 4, and four tracks from Rage Racer. Each track from each PlayStation release of the Ridge Racer game that was released is included in this package. Many new play modes are included to complement the original’s modes, such as Duel and Survival. Single Race and Wireless Battle modes are still included, despite renaming Single Race to Arcade.

The game also features a total of 62 fictional cars from seven fictional manufacturers (Kamata, Age, Danver, Gnade, Assoluto, Himmel, Soldat) that become available to the player after completing four tours (consisting of 16 races each) of increasing difficulty levels (Basic, Professional, Extra, Max) and various assorted mini-games. In addition to the latest cars, Ridge Racer 2 features “prizes” that are unlocked after completing a tour, such as opening movies for previous Ridge Racer titles and trial E3 demonstrations.

It is also worth noting the “Nitrous Boost” system that works in the same way as before. The player has a nitrous gauge consisting of three nitrous tanks, which are either fully depleted or partially filled at the start of the race. When the player drifts through corners (especially at very high drift angles) during the race, the nitrous gauge fills. When the player fills one of the three nitrous tanks, it can be activated to achieve a temporary speed boost. Nitrous tanks cannot be recharged while using any tank, but the remaining speed can be used when the nitrous boost batch expires by immediately entering corners to recharge the player’s nitrous tanks at a faster rate than usual.”
