Ape Escape On The Loose PSP is a new edition of Ape Escape released on the PlayStation Portable in 2005. This new version features some changes from the original release, starting with Ape Escape for the PlayStation in 1999. The series includes playful monkey themes, unique gameplay, and a variety of pop culture references. The first game in this series was the first to make the DualShock or Dual Analog Controller mandatory.

It is considered a fantastic platformer and one of the most popular action-adventure games available on PSP. It looks better than the original release, with improved controls and graphics, along with numerous features. Despite the game being old, it still retains a great charm.

The original Ape Escape provided a decent platforming experience. Its arrival on the PlayStation 1 marked an innovation in precise game mechanics. However, with time, it faced challenges in 3D platform design. Quickly forward to the presentation and the latest entry in the Ape Escape series launched alongside the new Sony PSP device. Currently, one of only two platformers on the system, Ape Escape: On the Loose takes you back to the original PlayStation game, updated only with a series of additions. Fans of the series will undoubtedly feel at home in most aspects, but the nature of the PSP also changes the core Ape concept in some significant ways.

But first, a little monkey business. On the Loose reflects the story of the classic PlayStation game, where a monkey named Specter gains devilish intelligence and ambition by wearing the P-Point Helmet. He then sets out to rewrite history by unleashing a band of cunning chimpanzees through time. Specter hopes to rid the planet of human control, and it’s up to you, a lively red man named Spike, to stop him. To do so, you’ll traverse time, capturing about 200 monkeys with a variety of cool tools, such as the stun club, slingshot, and propeller. The way these tools were used was undoubtedly the best aspect of the original. Using the DualShock controller, you could control Spike’s movement with the left stick and the tools with the right hand. A simple concept, indeed, but it worked noticeably well.

On the Loose features a gameplay hub called TimeStation, branching into several rooms. Depending on the room you enter, you can access the main game world, mini-games, educational programs, and the save/load area. Loosely divided by different ages, with three stages in each. You’ll play through the Lost Land filled with dinosaurs, explore the depths of Oceana’s waters, and spend some time in Medieval Mayhem. Each stage contains a certain number of escaped monkeys, although you only need to catch some of them to pass the level. However, the more you get, the better the rewards. Each stage is full of various obstacles, such as rotating blades, floating platforms, and frozen lakes. Of course, you also need to battle a number of enemies by age category, most of which are not too challenging to dispatch. All in all, On the Loose looks very much like the standard 3D platforming system. And it is.

Each stage features excellent design and an impressive size, allowing you to see all the details clearly on the fantastic PSP screen. One negative aspect is that Spike lacks some of the finesse from previous games, making traversing environments challenging at certain points. Losing precision will cost you lives, especially when jumping from platform to platform. Speeding through a narrow strip of land? Forget about it. You’ll definitely die multiple times. Sometimes, Spike also struggles to grab edges when performing Jackie Chan-like jumps between crevices or ledges. Practically anything that requires a high level of finesse is harder than it should be. On the positive side, you can manually control the camera by pressing the left shoulder button. A quick click will center the camera behind Spike, while continuously pressing switches to first-person view. You’ll use this technique a lot, especially when standing at the edge of a chasm. Unfortunately, it’s too easy to accidentally switch to first-person mode (which freezes Spike in place) when all you want to do is center the camera. This is particularly annoying during race sequences when you need to center the camera to get your bearings before running across a three-inch beam. Losing precious seconds each time it happens, and it happens much more than it should. Aside from this, On the Loose has some glaring camera issues. Sometimes, the camera is placed inside a rock or behind a wall. This also contributes to many premature deaths.
